Around 6:30PM, a short but brutal rain storm moved through the southern half of Ross Township, bringing
many calls to the station. Station 246 was first alerted along with Stations 252 (Keating), 254 (Fire Police,
251RIT (Seville), 510 (Ross Twp. Fire Marshall), and EMS Station 211 (Ross / West View EMS) to 125 Gaymor Dr.
for a smell of something electrical burning in the structure. 252 Engine, and 252 Assistant Chief (Mark E. Ford)
arrived first and began investigating. 246 Engine 2, and 246 Chief (Jeff Giger) arrived next and was alerted from
the residents at 123 Gaymor Drive there TV had burnt up as a result of the lighting strikes. 252, and 246 crews
cleared both residents, and both headed for their next assignment. 246 Assistant Chief (Tom Mann) advised
while enroute to the Gaymor Call he saw a transformer blow in the area of Thompson Run, and Babcock Blvd.
251 Chief (Joe Gross) diverted to check that while 246 units were re-directed to 4200 Mount Troy Road for a front
yard, and basement flooding. 251 Chief advised no evident signs of hazards in the area, and 246 Engine 2, and
246 Chief (Jeff Giger) began to start pumping on Mount Troy Road. As 246 units were clearing this call,
252 Assistant Chief (Mark E. Ford) requested Station 246 start toward the Cascade Apartments off Cemetery Lane
to assist them with pumping out several units in the complex that were flooding. 246 units arrived, and assisted
Station 252 with the detail until it was under control. Shortly after the waters began to recede at the Cascades,
County 911 advised 246 Chief there was a call in our district in the area of Thompson Run Road and Woodbridge Dr.
for wires down in the trees sparking. 247 Chief (Paul Hill) was in the area and advised he did have active fire at the top
of the pole. 246 Chief arrived shortly thereafter and confirmed no hazards, no need for fire department response.
246 Engine 2 cancelled enroute per 246 Chief. After getting home from these calls, about 30 minutes after being back
in station we were alerted for another transformer fire in the area of Babcock Blvd, and Thompson Run Rd. 246 Engine 2,
and 246 Chief arrived and found the transformer in question charred. 246 Chief advised County the pole number, and
requested Duquesne Light take a look at the pole. He then cleared all 246 units.
